Chrysler 345 HEMI Engine Design Basics. The Chrysler/Dodge 5.7 HEMI is a 90° V8 engine with a total displacement of 5.7 liters or 345 cid. It has a cast aluminum head and cast iron block. Compared with traditional flat-topped motors, the HEMI engines have hemispherical shaped combustion chambers. The Dodge 5.7L HEMI engine is also commonly referred to as the 345 HEMI in honor of its 345 cubic inch displacement. It’s a long-running pushrod engine that debuted with 345 horsepower in the 2003 Dodge Ram. The 5.7 V8 remains much the same today, however, it did go through updates to improve power and fuel efficiency.
More Than Meets The Eye. The RAM badge on the grille delivers double the trouble, delivering menacing looks and up to 32.9 liters of air per minute to the engine. This high-performance air-induction system filters four times as much dirt and debris than the Ford Raptor2.
That first-gen Hemi V8 was built from 1951 to 1958 and represented Chrysler’s first production overhead valve V8s. The line-up started with the 331 cubic inch (5.4 litre) 'FirePower' and 'FireDome' engines which eventually grew to the 392 Hemi (6.4 litres). The 1957 300c was powered by a 6.4-litre Firepower V8.
